Ilia State University is located in Tbilisi, Georgia. The university was resulting from a merger between 6 diverse educational and research institutions. The university was founded in 2006 and was the first university in Georgia to include the principles of a liberal education.

The university has four more schools within the campus: the school of arts and sciences, law school, Iliauni Business School, and natural sciences and engineering. Each of the schools offers courses in undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs. The institution facilitates approximately 50 bachelor's and 50 master's courses. Moreover, the university runs 25 research institutes, research centers, and laboratories around the country.

This university ranked 2nd in Georgia and is listed in the top 1600 universities worldwide by the Center for World University Rankings CWUR. The ISU is additionally listed as the top 22% of universities globally by the EduRank University Rankings.

It has also received institutional accreditation from Georgia's National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement. Moreover, the university is a prime member of the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration, Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics, and Science on Stage Europe.
